Winter portraits have a unique charm, especially when they’re set against a backdrop of snow-covered landscapes. While snowy photos are enchanting, proper preparation is key to ensure you and your partner stay warm and comfortable throughout the shoot! Here are five essential tips to help you prepare for your snowy winter photo shoot:
The most important aspect of preparing for a snowy winter photo session is dressing appropriately for the brisk weather. Opt for thermal undergarments, layers of clothing, and a stylish winter coat that complements your complete look. Don’t forget special accessories like gloves, scarves, and hats to keep extremities warm while still looking fashionable. You can also bring clothes to change into once we’ve reached our destination, which is why we always carry a portable changing station to every session for our couples!
In addition to dressing warm, bring along heat sources to keep you comfortable during the shoot. Pack a thermos of hot water or tea to stay hydrated and warm from the inside out (sharing a cozy drink makes for a perfect photo op). You can also keep it under your clothes or against your person to warm up between setups. Hand warmers are also a must-have to keep your hands and pockets cozy between shots. And a good pair of snowshoes or boots with good traction to navigate snowy terrain safely is always key- heels and snow do not mix!
Mentally preparing for the cold weather is just as important as dressing warm. Embrace the beauty of the winter landscape and focus on the magical moments you’ll capture together but also let your photographer know if you’re ever feeling like you need a break to warm up or take a second for yourself. Keep a positive attitude and remember that the snowy backdrop will add a unique and romantic touch to your wedding photos. Don’t worry too much about a breezy wind sweeping by- these little weather elements add to the atmosphere of your overall gallery!
Make sure to take advantage of the snowy landscape by discussing with your photographer what kind of picturesque winter locations you would enjoy most for your photo session. Some types of features can be spots with snow-covered trees, frozen lakes, or cozy cabins which can add to the romantic atmosphere of your photos. Work with your photographer to find the perfect winter wonderland backdrop that aligns with your vision for the shoot. Remember that your photographer should make sure to obtain any necessary permits or permissions for shooting in outdoor locations to avoid any unexpected issues on the day of the session.
With proper preparation and a positive mindset, your wintery session can be a truly magical experience! So bundle up, step outside, and let the winter wonderland become the backdrop for your love story.
